Detox Baths 101

What is a Detox Bath? It's glorious! My family has one at least once a month. The benefits are endless. Simply soaking in a hot bath with 2-3 cups of dissolved Epsom Salts can assist in removing harmful impurities from your body in about 10-15 minutes. In a nutshell, magnesium sulfate basically tells unwanted toxins to leave the party. But that's not all.

When you add a few more simple and natural ingredients, that's where the magic happens! Ingredients like Pink Himalayan salt, Baking Soda and Essential Oils will transform you detox bath into a spa day. I also recommend Dry Brushing before entering your bath. Your skin is your largest organ and the first line of defense from chemicals and bacteria. By helping your body shed dead layers of skin, you are also removing these harmful agents. Dry brushing also speeds up your lymphatic system's ability to eliminate waste.

What you need:

Epsom Salt or Magnesium Flakes

Hot tub of water

Pink Himalayan Salt or Sea Salt

Baking soda

High Quality Essential Oils (find them Here)

Coconut Oil or Olive Oil

STEP ONE: Add the Epsom Salt to a tub of hot water

Epsom salt dosage: For children under 60 lbs, add 1/2 cup to a standard bath. For children 60 lbs to 100 lbs, add 1 cup to a standard bath. For people 100 lbs and up, add 2 cups or more to a standard bath.

STEP TWO: Add the baking soda

Adding baking soda to a detox bath helps to neutralize the chemicals in the water, especially chlorine. It also may help remove bacteria, odors, and acidity.

Baking Soda Dosage: For children under 60 lbs, add 1/4th cup to a standard bath. For children 60 lbs to 100 lbs, add 1/2 cup to a standard bath. For people 100 lbs and up, add 1 cup to a standard bath.

STEP THREE: Add the coconut oil (or extra virgin olive oil)

I like adding coconut oil or olive oil to our detox baths for a few reasons. One, it helps the essential oils to bind to the coconut oil and stick to my kids skin which helps moisturize their skin. Two, it keeps the essential oils from sticking to the side of the tub. And lastly, it clings to skin even after you get out of the tub.

Coconut Oil or Olive Oil Dosage: For children under 60 lbs, add 1 tablespoon to a standard bath. For children 60 lbs to 100 lbs, add 2 tablespoons to a standard bath. For people 100 lbs and up, add 3 tablespoons to a standard bath.

STEP FOUR: Add the Essential Oils

Whenever I mention essential oils, I am referring to only the highest quality, therapeutic grade oils in the world today, doTERRA. The great thing about essential oils is that they can be used for a variety of different reasons. To learn more, click Here.

Essential Oil Dosage: For children under 60 lbs, add 4 drops to a standard bath. For children 60 lbs to 100 lbs, add 6 drops to a standard bath. For people 100 lbs and up, add 10 drops to a standard bath.

Here are a few of my favorite ways to use essential oils in a detox bath for my Family. Remember, Essential Oils are very versatile and have endless benefits in each bottle.

Essential Oil Suggestions:

Calming and Relaxing: Lavender, Ylang Ylang, Roman Chamomile, or Serenity Blend

Bonding: If you would like to jump in with your baby or child, I recommend Frankincense to help promote bonding.

Immune Boosting: Melaleuca or Frankincense

Congestion: Breathe Blend

Stomach Ache: Ginger

Constipation: DigestZen or Lemon

Sunburn: Lavender or Melaleuca (aka “tea tree”)

Grounding: Balance Blend

Nausea or Upset tummy: Ginger or DigestZen

Diaper Rash and Irritated skin: Sandalwood, Myrrh, Lavender, or Melaleuca

When it's time for Kiddos to have their detox night, you will want to skip scrubbing them when it's detox night. Their pores are open and you want them to absorb the magnesium and oils. I recommend using something like Dr. Bronner’s Baby Soap or a bar of castile soap if you must wash them. Otherwise skip the soap. Try to keep them in the bath for 20 minutes to get all the benefits of the bath. Lather them up, if you wish, with a natural moisturizer like coconut oil. I add in a few drops of lavender and give them a light massage as I’m putting on their clothes. Give them some water or leave some beside their bed. Detox baths can make you thirsty. Cuddle on the couch and read a good book before kissing them goodnight! Magnesium promotes sleep so they should sleep very good for you!
